Colour - ringed Mediterranean Gulls in Scotland
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction No other European gull has shown such a dramatic and rapid change of distribution in the last decades as the Mediterranean Gull Larus melanocephalus. Whereas in the 1940s breeding locations were restricted to coastal areas of the Black Sea in the Ukraine, Mediterranean Gulls can now be found nesting in many places scattered over Europe, in locations as near to Scotland as the Netherlands and the south of England (Hagemeijer & Blair 1997). It is a migratory bird, and the wintering areas of the Mediterranean Gull have similarly expanded, and for at least some regions in Scotland, it is nowadays regarded a regular winter visitor.

Seabirds and chronic oil pollution: self-cleaning properties of gulls, Laridae, as revealed from colour-ring sightings.
Mystery oil spills off the Dutch coast affected colonial, adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls prior to and within the breeding season. From colour-ringed individuals, it was demonstrated that most oiled birds survived and were clean within a few weeks and often bred successfully. Further evidence of self-cleaning properties of Larus-gulls is provided from a long-term colour-ringing project (1984-20...

The levels of eight PCB congeners (IUPAC 8, 20, 28, 52, 101, 118, 138 and 180) and 13 organochlorine pesticides (a-HCH, b-HCH, Lindane, Heptachlor, Heptachlor epoxide, Aldrin, Dieldrin, Endrin, 2,4'-DDT, 2,4'-DDD, 4,4'-DDT 4,4'-DDD and 4,4'-DDE) were measured in eggs of Mediterranean gulls (Larus melanocephalus) (Lm), avocets (Recurvirostra avosetta) (Ra) and common terns (Sterna hirundo) (Sh) ...
متن کاملDifferential Annual Movement Patterns in a Migratory Species: Effects of Experience and Sexual Maturation
Some animals migrate long distances to exploit important seasonal food resources in the northern regions of the northern hemisphere, whilst avoiding winter starvation. Changes in the individual's age and navigational skills are likely to affect migration, which in turn influences the geographic distribution of individuals. Processes such as sexual maturation and navigational abilities are affec...
متن کاملExperimental studies of coral snake mimicry: do snakes mimic millipedes?
The prevalence of similarly ringed colour patterns in Neotropical snake species has stimulated heated controversy over the cause of this apparent convergence since it was first noted by Cope (1860) and Wallace (1870) in the last century. These ringed and banded species include venomous (neurotoxic) elapid coral snakes (Micrurus) and a number of mildly or non-venomous colubrid and anniliid snake...
متن کاملLiving on the Edge: Demography of the Slender-Billed Gull in the Western Mediterranean
Small and peripheral populations are typically vulnerable to local extinction processes but important for the metapopulation dynamics of species. The Slender-billed gull (Chroicocephalus genei) is a long-lived species breeding in unstable ephemeral coastal habitats. Their Western Mediterranean populations are relatively small and represent the edge of their global geographical distribution. At ...
